About the course

The Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) (EYE) prepares you for the Early Years workforce, enabling you to work and care for children from birth to five years and gain knowledge of children from 5 to 7 years. On successful achievement of the qualification, you will be able to enter the work force as Early Years Educators*.

The course is accredited by NCFE CACHE, who are the leading Awarding Organisation for the care sector. Full details on the diploma’s specification can be found here.

*See Entry Requirements below regarding maths, English and paediatric first aid certificate.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 16 or over and must be working in an early years setting – e.g. as a childminder or in a nursery / pre-school. A minimum of 350 placement hours is required to complete the course.

All course materials are allocated to you on-line and therefore you must be able to use IT packages. You will need an internet connection and ability to use a word processing software (e.g. Word, Open Office) on your computing device.

On obtaining your Early Years Educator qualification, you must also hold GCSE maths and English A*-C (or Level 2 qualification, including Functional Skills) to count in the staff-to-child ratio at Level 3. To count in ratio, you must also hold a full paediatric first aid (PFA) certificate or emergency PFA certificate within 3 months of starting work (EYFS 2017, Section 3.25).

Course Delivery

You do not need to take time away from your workplace to attend classes or workshops as we deliver this qualification through a mixture of face-to-face assessments and online learning. We use an award winning online teaching resource and e-portfolio system called Laser Learning, which your assessor will support you to use.

Learning Hours

The recommended guided learning hours for this qualification is 486 hours (these would include time being observed and self-study).  Please consider how you will fit this commitment and level of study time in before embarking on this qualification.  You are expected to complete the qualification within 18 months.

In this qualification, you must:

  • achieve a pass in all 23 mandatory units of this qualification
  • show competence (be observed) in a real work environment across specific age ranges

You may need to find placements if you do not work directly with the age ranges shown below in the course of your normal working day. CACHE recommend the amount of hours this should be:

  • 0 – 1 year 11 months (25 hours)
  • 2 – 2 years 11 months (133 hours)
  • 3 – 5 years (192 hours)

There are 3 themes containing the 23 mandatory units:

  • Theme 1: Health and well-being
  • Theme 2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice
  • Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness

Each of the mandatory units are made up from learning outcomes and each learning outcome is linked to a number of assessment criteria.

Learning outcomes can cover skills that you can perform, or knowledge that you can learn or can sometimes cover a combination of the two.

Progression

Upon achievement of this qualification, you will gain your Early Years Educator practitioner status and will be able to count in ratios as a member of staff with a full and relevant level 3 qualification**.

You can progress to the Level 4 Certificate for the Early Years Advanced Practitioner or other higher level early years qualifications.

**Subject to meeting maths, English and paediatric first aid certificate requirements – see Entry Requirements above.
