Once you have registered your interest in becoming a childminder, a staff member from Childminding Matters will telephone you to invite you along to an information session.

This session will give you an opportunity to find out all about childminding, ask any questions and to be given all the necessary paperwork.

To become a childminder you will need to:

  • Attend Childminder Information session (2 ½ hour session)


  • Attend a paediatric based First Aid Training course (12 hour course) before they are registered.


  • Attend an "Introduction to Childcare Practice - home based". (19 hour course)


  • Make their home safe for children to satisfy the Welfare Requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage
  • and the requirements of the Childcare Register (compulsory and voluntary)

  • Have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check completed


  • Have a health check to make sure they are a "suitable person" to look after other peoples children.


  • Have an Inspection by Ofsted to confirm they have done all of these things and to prove they can meet the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.


  • Childminding Matters staff are able to offer support and advice, while you are going through the registration process, and throughout your career as a childminder.
