Question:
I am a childminder who has been told I must be working to Common Core as I am registered on the Voluntary Register, what is Common Core?

Answer:
When Ofsted transferred you to the new Childcare registers you would have been placed on both the Early Years Register and the Compulsory and Voluntary parts of the Childcare Register. As a Childminder registered on the Voluntary part of the Childcare Register, you will need to demonstrate how you meet the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge or hold a relevant level 2 or above qualification.
The Common Core is a set of skills and knowledge required for all those people whose work brings them into regular contact with children, young people and families and this includes volunteer workers.
The skills and knowledge you are required to have are described under six main headings:

  • Communication
  • Development
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child
  • Supporting transitions by helping children to move from one setting to another or from one phase of development to another
  • Working with many different agencies
  • Sharing information
  • Further information is available from www.cwdcouncil.org.uk/common-core

Workforce Development Early Years, Childcare and Extended School Services are in the process of writing to every registered childminder in Norfolk to support you in identifying how your current skills and knowledge meet the Common Core.

    Question:
I have just received my updated Ofsted Childminder Registration Certificate and I am really struggling to understand what the ages and numbers of children I can mind - what can I do?

    Answer:
Firstly it is your responsibility to adhere to the registrations requirements but if you are having difficulties with understanding your ratios, please contact the Ofsted helpline on 08456 40 40 40 and ask them to clarify the numbers of children you can mind and the ages.

    Question:
I am a childminder in Norfolk and was talking to someone who works in a nursery who has just completed CAF training. Could you tell me what CAF is please?

    Answer:
CAF stands for Common Assessment Framework and it standardises the approach to conducting assessments for children with additional needs, which are not being met by universal services, to help the child and their family.

The CAF form has 3 elements
    1) A simple pre-assessment checklist
    2) A process for undertaking a common assessment
    3) A standard form

Training is available through the Norfolk County Council Workforce Development Team 01603 222900 and details are in the Training Directory 2009/10 page 65.
